From my research through talking to franchisees, it's my understanding that franchising demands that you follow the system. So, if changing the way things are done is among your favorite pastimes, think seriously about another form of self-employment. Here is an example of what I'm talking about. My good friend owns a Two Men and a Truck franchise. Were you able to attend the The Grand Opening of Sunrider's Los Angeles Manufacturing Facilities? Well no worries, if you were this might bring back some memories and if you were unable to attend or didn't know anything about it check it out.

On Wednesday, July 23, 2008 Sunrider proudly hosted several hundred IBOs, neighbors, business people, friends, elected officials, and dignitaries for a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at its Los Angeles Manufacturing Plants. This special ceremony marked the official grand opening of Sunrider's expansion of its main manufacturing operations into newly renovated and constructed buildings of about one million square feet on about 40 acres at 1461 W. Francisco Street in the Harbor Gateway Industrial Center in the City of Los Angeles. This is no small feat because these modern facilities include manufacturing, research & development, offices, warehouse, and laboratories and will support Sunrider's continued growth, new production techniques (including fermentation and alcohol extraction), and increased efficiency.

After touring this new facility, IBOs were treated to spirited musical entertainment from the UCLA Marching Band. Everyone then moved inside for the start of the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony with a warm welcome from ceremony hostess Sunny Beutler. Dr. Tei-Fu Chen then thanked everyone for attending and supporting Sunrider. Sunny then introduced Sunrider's many special guests, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca, Los Angeles City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, Orange County Chief of Protocol Joanne Sokolski, City of Torrance Mayor Pro Tem Bill Sutherland, and representatives from the People's Republic of China, Indonesia, Mexico, and Colombia Consulates. Also introduced were representatives from Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's office, California State Senator Jenny Oropeza's office, and California State Assembly member Ted Lieu's office. Certificates and Proclamations recognizing this grand opening were then presented to Drs. Chen.

Sunny then welcomed Mike Herrera, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Bay to the stage for a special presentation to Drs. Chen recognizing Sunrider's generous donation of a large passenger van to this nonprofit youth organization. This van was available for viewing outside and is being used to transport children from under-served community areas to local youth programs and activities. Following this, everyone on stage then shared in simultaneously cutting the grand opening ribbon to great applause and audience excitement. Attendees then enjoyed a southern-style traditional Chinese lion dance and Dr. Chen "fed" the lions.

After this performance, the Chens joined special guests on a VIP facility tour. All attendees then dined on a sumptuous Chinese buffet lunch and were entertained throughout lunch by creative singing and dancing performances by IBOs from various countries.

A good measuring stick of growth is the number of new franchisees added each year. This information may not be readily available, so it may have to come directly from the franchisor. Also ask about the number of operational support people devoted to new franchisees. The ratio of support personnel to franchisee is important. This can be a good gauge of the growth of the franchise corporation, because the more franchises sold, the more support people you need. As problems or issues arise, you want to make sure that you will be supported.

One obvious fact regarding the number of franchisees added each year, if a franchisor has been in business for a number of years but has added very few franchisees, there may be issues or problems within their system. It's possible that current franchisees don't validate well due to those problems within the system, so it's possible that potential franchisees are rejecting them.

If that's not the case, the problem may be that the franchisor has insufficient staff to handle all the elements associated with getting a new franchisee up and running. On average, there should be one support person for every 10-20 new franchisees. If this is the case, the new franchisees should be getting adequate preparation and support to develop their businesses.

Finding a solid franchise company is just one step towards making your decision easier. After determining that this is a solid company, one you feel you are interested in, your next step would be to do research. This would entail calling and interviewing existing franchisees, or maybe even visiting some of the franchisees. You should also meet with and talk to the support staff. Don't feel too badly. Many people trying to start a home based business were promised the moon but have been left with a dim reflection of themselves in a pool of failure. It's tragic that over 95% of home business workers, who have been lured by the slick marketing of MLM or multi-level marketing companies, have had their dreams dashed and have become discouraged and quit trying. By the end of this article, you will learn the difference between a bad business model, traditional MLM and a superior business model that leaves no one behind and guarantees success in a home based business.

Traditionally, MLM companies have been primarily recruiting companies growing the ranks of their distributors to ridiculous numbers that can't support the business long term. The number of distributors grows too rapidly and they begin competing with each other for the same slice of the pie. In order to justify having so many distributors, the company charges astronomical prices for its products, so that everyone in the food chain can be compensated. Customers are then faced with buying what become luxury items instead of reasonably priced products. When that happens the decision to fill up the car or heat the home takes precedence and the MLM company sees a decline in sales. And then the worst happens. The companies distributors begin to fall by the wayside. Remember the 95% failure rate? It is inevitable that this will happen.

MLM companies are simply bottom feeders. They churn up the market, sign people up, get them to commit to expensive auto-shipments knowing that most recruits will quit after several months. But that's ok because they know that as people quit, others will continue to join. And somewhere way up high in the organization the founders are doing quite well for themselves. Unfortunately, the picture at the bottom is pretty grim. And to add insult to injury customers begin seeing equivalent products at major retailers or on E-Bay for 75% less.

The business model we have just looked at is premised on recruiting and duplication. In other words, new recruits are expected to perform at the level of the company's best performers who are usually professional, experienced sales people who live, eat, breathe, and sleep MLM. The average recruit is somebody who wants to make a little additional income and get a discount on their own products. The likelihood that they will ever duplicate their sponsor's success is very, very slim.

Now let's talk about the superior business model mentioned earlier. Why not focus on a smaller, leaner distributor organization for the home based business? Why not focus on growing customers and not distributors? Now there's a novel idea! Customers actually buy products and fuel the business with cash. Distributors aren't left with empty promises and hype.
