Many states allow residents to have home equity "lines of credit", where you can access up to 85% of the equity in your house, but are not required to take it all out at once.

Another option is to apply for a traditional commercial bank loan. Franchisees generally have an easier time securing bank loans than do independent business owners because they have the franchisors track record working in their favor. Under the PLP, the SBA delegates loan approval, closing, and most servicing and liquidation authority and responsibility to these carefully selected lenders, thereby drastically quickening the process. Franchises are one of the most popular ways to start a business. In 2005, there were about 850,000 franchises operating in the U.S. alone with approximately 10 million people employed. Sales volume accounted for about 40% of all retail sales at around $1.5 billion. This information is all according to research which was conducted by the International Federation Association and the National Franchise Association.

At the present time, I don't really know if there is any business left that has not tried the franchise. You can find fast food restaurant franchises, cleaning services and even automotive shops. The most popular franchise categories still seem to be the restaurant, deli and sandwich franchises.

Franchises all have a couple of things in common that makes them attractive to potential business owners:
1. Fast start up utilizing a working marketing system;
2. Peace of mind because it has been proven to work already;
3. Exclusive territory (in most cases).

At the same time, there are known disadvantages. For example, many franchise companies don't live up to the standard of support they promised. Some franchises are overly strict with regards to their branding and marketing requirements, which may be disappointing for a creative entrepreneur. One other disadvantage is the work pressure, especially when operating a franchise that requires hiring employees or staff.

If you do not have any money to get your business off the ground, it's better not to start at all. Lack of financial backing, or capital, has been the downfall of many businesses. Careful planning is the key. Planning, combined with a preparedness to live a frugal lifestyle for years to come, is very important.

What about your downline? Realize that your entire downline is not customers but distributors just like you. Are they all going to buy leads and do this too? Nope.

I don't buy leads. I buy customers. They cost $50 each. Half of what the results of buying leads conversion cost without all the time spent. I don't have to make any calls. I don't get rejected. I do not have good telemarketing skills. I don't need them. And when I buy customers, they appear in my downline without any effort on my part.

And the 10% of my downline that are distributors do the same thing. Man-O-man we are happy buying customers not leads!

It's also important to know the level of support you'll get after you buy the franchise. Paying a franchise fee is required for these services, so make sure that is noted in the contract. You may also want to ask about marketing and advertising. Be sure there's ongoing training, not just at the initial sale.

Some franchisors have been known to oversell their franchises, and squeeze the territory. Make sure that doesn't happen to the franchise that is for sale. Find the number of franchises that can be bought or sold in a geographic area. This ensures you don't have competition from new franchise owners shortly after you purchase the franchise. You may have to call existing franchise owners who operate in larger cities. Ask them how to handle this, if it presents a problem.

Make sure you review the financials of the franchise you are considering. If need be, hire a CPA to take a look at the books. Make sure you get their adjusted net income, the total amount of cash produced by the business. That income includes the profits, the owner's salary and all of the many cash-related benefits of owning the business.

When you find one, be sure you are prequalified with a lending institute, so you’ll be ready to buy when you spot that ideal franchise. However, sometimes the relationship between franchisee and franchisor just doesn’t work out the way both parties expected. Egos or rules may get in the way of the relationship.

Failure, just as in a marriage ending in divorce, is real, even with franchise businesses. There are many reasons why a franchise business relationship fails. Just as in a marriage, it takes two. Sometimes the franchisee is at fault, and sometimes it's the franchisor. It doesn't matter who's at fault, the important thing is that both parties understand the "rules of engagement" that are usually spelled out in the franchise agreement. So when a dispute arises the franchisee and franchisor know what to expect.

It's imperative that both parties thoroughly address the franchise agreement, and "rules of engagement" before the franchisee invests any money. Knowing the rules even by the most optimistic and enthusiastic franchisee may save embarrassment or disappointment if not addressed at the start of the franchise relationship.

According to some lawyers who specialize in franchise law, "virtually every franchise agreement provides for termination on some or all of the following grounds: failing to pay royalties or other fees; providing false information to the franchisor; selling unauthorized products or services; abandoning the business for more than a week; attempting an unauthorized assignment; misusing the trademarks of the franchisor; and violating any law, statute or regulation, or being convicted of a felony."

In most cases the franchisor is not purposely being difficult. The Federal Trade Commission (F.T.C.) and many states have stringent regulations as to how franchisors can provide this information to prospective franchisees. However, there are ways to get this important information.

Many franchisors used unjustified or misleading earnings claims to sell their franchise opportunities, so in 1979 Congress passed legislation authorizing the F.T.C. to regulate the franchise industry, with an affort to try and stop any such bad practices. Many states also passed similar legislation. The current F.T.C. and state rules do not forbid a franchise company from supplying information about the earnings that can be achieved in their business. They do, however, regulate how the information is given to a prospective franchisee.

The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) contains a lot of information and that is where the franchise provides their earnings claims, so it's in writing. I have always thought the idea of owning a franchise business was a goal worth working toward. But buying a franchise business can cost a lot of money, not only to purchase the business, but to continue paying the parent company for the use of the franchise.

There are many work at home businesses that are like a franchise home business, only they don't cost a lot to get going, and instead of paying the parent company to be part of their franchise system, you are paid by the parent company for helping build their business and market their products.

Many years ago I was able to work from home because of a good business built with a company called Formor International. This network marketing company had a unique compensation plan that paid high commissions for the second level, or tier, of marketers in your downline, which encouraged people to build under their downline, which put those people into profit more quickly and strengthened the group.

Formor also had websites that promoted individual products. It was easy for marketers to promote the products and build a customer base, which put sales into the system and provided steady income to the distributors since the products were very good, priced reasonably, and the customers purchased them month after month.

Many of us made enough income from this work at home business that we were able to take that one minute commute and work at our computers all day, never having to hop in a car and drive to an office. This was better than a franchise business because we didn't even have to leave the house to make money at home.

One day those in my upline decided, for some reason I still don't understand, to quit working with this company and move to another one... starting over to build a new distributor base and income stream. When my upline and many of my downline deserted me, I thought of simply moving on, too. But I had a lot of customers in my group and good income from those customers.

Mostly likely I would still be working with Formor, except they suddenly quit giving the distributors the free websites to promote the products, and thus we were no longer able to build our customer base, and over the next year my income dropped to the point I finally left Formor.

My work at home experience with Formor did teach me that a good base of customers makes for a solid business. It's too bad the company shut off the customer websites. It would be like a franchise company ending all their contracts with those working with them.

I recently found another company that also has very good products, and encourages those building a business to buy customers. We buy customers for our work at home business each month, and once we have a customer, they belong to our position for as long as they remain a customer. This concept of building a work at home business with a strong customer base is one that works and more companies should try it.

Again, working with this company is like a home business franchise without the high costs of purchasing a franchise and paying monthly fees to participate in a franchise opportunity. And this company generates customers who love their products and purchase those products month after month. And we buy customers this company offers, which put a solid base of product purchases into our group and provide a steady income for our work at home business... and this is way better than any franchise business.

Should your upline or downline in this company decide to pack up and move on, that doesn't really affect me because they can leave, but their customers stay right there, and the sales commissions earned roll right up to my position and my work at home business just keeps growing.
